Who is your favorite author/writer or novel?
"When it comes to novels, I’ve tended to gravitate towards early classics and modern literature. American novelist and Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison is my absolute favorite with books like The Bluest Eye, Beloved and Home. I also enjoy rereading the early English novels, especially the works of Daniel Defoe like Robinson Crusoe (1719) and Moll Flanders (1722), although they are more journalistic (fact-based) in style, which was the trend at the time, than what we would now consider a ‘true novel.’ It is the same argument made against the first novel by an African American, Clotel, written by William Wells Brown in 1853. His novel explores the story of Thomas Jefferson’s rumored illegitimate daughter with his slave, Sally Hemings and is structured similarly to the slave narratives that preceded it. These books and authors are amazing and continue to inspire my own literary endeavors."
